At a certain point in time, the children of God got tired of being led by God. Mind you, they were winning all the battles He helped them fight. They did not lack for any good thing but they wanted a king with skin on. Like other peoples, they had to have a visible king, not an invisible one. In the same way, you embark on the business of choosing a king for yourself and rejecting God.
Rejecting God? God forbid! That is what our lips say but God sees into our hearts. For instance, when this particular incident happened, Samuel was the prophet and he naturally assumed the people were rejecting him. But hear what God had to say about it. “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.
Some Of Our Chosen Kings
In choosing a king for yourself, you are rejecting God, the creator of Heaven and of earth. A firm grasp of that conclusion should cause us to examine our lives to see what kings we have. I appreciate that this kind of talk is offensive to most Christians since we generally consider ourselves good.
Nevertheless, it is important because our God is a jealous God. Having another king or god besides the God of Heaven may lead to hell. That is why the Apostle Paul gives us a litmus test for identifying the various kings we have. He argues that you are a slave to anyone to whom you submit, who automatically becomes your king.
Such a king could be money, the most popular king of all, particularly of prosperity believers and preachers. Unfortunately, the minute we become prosperity believers, we reject God, even if we don’t realize it. You could be choosing a king for yourself from among your children.
Choosing a King For Yourself From Your Children
Everything such a child demands, he gets even when you know it may not be good for him. You are unable to discipline him even as you watch him destroying his life. It is possible this is what happened between Abraham and Isaac that caused God to ask Abraham to sacrifice Isaac.
If it can happen to Abraham, the father of faith, it can happen to you and me. Today, God may be asking you to sacrifice – let go – of that king in your home. It could be your job. Whenever there is a conflict between your job and worshipping God, you choose the job. Unknowingly, you are choosing a king for yourself and rejecting God.
One king that you may never be aware of is yourself. That is what the so-called humanists do and because they appear successful, believers join them. We make ourselves our kings. Our personal logic and reasoning begin to take precedence over the commandments of God. You are now your own king, regardless of what God says.
We could go on and on identifying the kings you have chosen for yourself but the list is inexhaustible. All we can do is to pray that the Holy Spirit will help you identify them today. And that this very day, God will enable you to let them go. That way, the God of Heaven becomes your only one King.
Maranatha!
