What would you answer if God came and asked you what you are wearing? If you are at the National Cathedral or some such important location, the answer might be Prada. Or they could say Gucci, Vera Wang, or Balenciaga. For me, unless I knew God’s implication, I might give my name, since I occasionally make my own outfits. You could answer with your dressmaker or your favorite designer.
But we would all be wrong. And that is because this body we take so much care of is nothing but a tent for us. Saint Peter knew this and towards the end of his life, he penned these words in 2 Peter 1.13-14. “Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you. Knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me.”
Peter realized that his true self was not his body but his soul. The Apostle Paul too referred to his body as his tent. I wonder how many believers know that the real us is on the inside. And that is the you that God refers to when He wonders what you are wearing. Mercifully, He does not leave us guessing about what He wants us to put on.
Our Clothes Must Include The Following
He tells us, “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering. Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another. If anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.”
You read the above passage for what you are wearing and your heart sinks; mine too. Guess what? God knows that and that is why He quickly shares the strategy for what you are wearing. Without such a strategy, most of us would go through life naked. In Colossians 3:15-16. God makes His strategy for what you are wearing clear.
“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Strategy For What You Are Wearing
First of all, let the peace of God – another name for Jesus, the Prince of Peace – reign in your heart. Is Jesus reigning in your heart? Do you even give Him any space in your heart? Perhaps you have not invited Jesus into your life. If that is the case, my friend, like Adam and Eve, you are naked, you just don’t know it yet. But you can correct that now by genuinely inviting Jesus to come and rule in your heart
Secondly, be thankful. Jesus did not need to come and die for us but He did so anyway. It is enough for us to be thankful even in the face of challenges. Next, and this where most of us fail, let the word of God dwell richly in your heart. From there, you will find wisdom (another name for God). Also, from there, you will be able to share psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with one another. Otherwise, your focus would be on negative things that fill our social media feeds.
Let grace be what comes out of your mouth. And the icing on the cake is love, which, as you know is another name for God. That is like the perfume you wear after you finish dressing up in all those fine, Godly characteristics. This is when what you are wearing will please God. We can do this and stop being spiritually naked. What do you say?
Maranatha!
