Regardless of how many covenants bible scholars claim to locate in the bible, God made only one covenant with you. Of course, the supposition is that you are a believer. Or else, you are interested in becoming a believer and to that, I say, “Praise the Lord.” All you need to do is invite Jesus to come and live in your heart.
Right about now, you are very confused, since your pastors have taught you about 7, 8 or even 9 covenants of God. We shall be clarifying all of that for you as we proceed. First of all, God is constantly making covenants with His creatures. The bible contains some that He made to people groups and nations. Why, you may have a few covenants of your own that God made with you. I know I have a handful of these personal covenants. But while all these are true, God made only one universal covenant. And that is with you as a believer in His Son, Jesus Christ.
Understanding This Concept Simplifies Your Life
Please stay with me here because this is about to make your life a lot less complex. Especially your Christian walk, which wrong doctrine has constantly muddled up for you. Little wonder most Christians are not confident of Whom they believe.
So-called bible scholars, who seemingly parrot one another anyway, make Christianity very complicated. It may be that they are trying to impress you with how knowledgeable they are. Whereas, the opposite, to simplify your life and give you rest, is God’s intention. Which is why He caused Jesus to do all the needed work on the cross.
You Need Faith To Activate God’s Covenant With You
With 7-9 covenants presented to you, you have two proximal problems. First, you are busy trying to show how much of the bible you know. You end up with little time to know and love God the way He created us to do. Secondly, you attempt to enter into all those covenants instead of identifying the One covenant that God made with you. That is, if you are a man or woman of faith.
Until the Fall, there was no need for a covenant. Everything that God created was good. However, man fouled up God’s world and caused God to have to reach an agreement with His creation. God initially planted the seed of the Seed (pun intended) as a threat to Satan. That threat was a result of the Fall which the devil instigated. At that time, God promised a Seed of man capable of bruising Satan’s head. However, because God is just, He also allowed Satan to bruise the Seed’s heel. Thank God that by being in Jesus, you are body, not heel.
God Made Two Separate Covenants With Abraham
God later found a righteous man named Noah. In a speech to Noah, God prepared the soil for the development of this Seed. He will never again destroy the world with a flood. As usual, God was watching over His word to perform it. Bible scholars often refer to it as the Noahic covenant. However, it is not a separate covenant, it is merely a fertilization of the soil for the seed of the Seed.
With Abraham, God first made a covenant, recorded in Genesis 15-17. God gave it before the birth of Isaac, the son of promise. He also made circumcision a sign of that covenant. It should therefore not surprise you that both Jews and Muslims (Ishmael) very religiously practice circumcision. That is because that covenant is to Abraham’s descendants according to the flesh. So unless you are a biological descendant of Abraham, that covenant has nothing to do with you.
God Gave His Universal Covenant Through Abraham
However, there is a different covenant with Abraham for those who are of faith in Jesus Christ. God made it well after Abraham had Isaac, well after he agreed to slaughter the son of promise. Enter Abraham, the father of faith. As a result of Abraham’s acquiescence, God found Himself a man of faith. Can you visualize Heaven applauding Abraham? Here was a man so like God that he gave up his only begotten son. Little wonder Abraham became the father of faith.
It was with this father of faith that God made His one covenant with you. The covenant came to you and I through Isaac, the son of promise, who later became Israel. He said to Abraham, “in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” The implication is that only those who are of faith can partake of this particular covenant with Abraham
The One Covenant Of God With You Is Jesus
Explaining this universal Abrahamic faith covenant later, Apostle Paul emphasized that, as opposed to seeds, this singular Seed is Christ. It is this covenant of faith that brought you and I into relationship with God. Because, the fulfillment of that covenant is Jesus. Did I hear Hallelujah! That is what I feel like shouting each time I think that God Himself fulfilled the conditions of His covenant with me.
God put it all on Himself and Jesus. I can enjoy the results of this work on the cross simply by believing in Jesus. He became a conqueror and I am now more than a conqueror because I did not have to suffer for the victory. Christ did it all and I simply entered into His completed work. He brought me into the family of God and it did not cost me anything. Jesus paid all the adoption fees.
Some refer to it as the New Covenant. Nevertheless, it is simply a fulfillment of that one Covenant that God made with you and I. You could call it the covenant of faith. As a believer, you can ignore all other covenants in the bible. Just enter into the grace wherewith you are saved. Uncomplicated. It is like you receive an ATM card to a limitless bank account. All you have to do is believe that the money is there and it is yours for the asking.
The Several Other Covenants
We are out of time this week to go further. We need to delve into our state between the giving of this one covenant and the coming of Jesus. It is more than half of the bible. But I promise to go into that next week. Unless the rapture takes place before then.
And then, there will be no need for teaching or preaching. We shall then awake in His likeness and see Him face to face. And you know that in His face, all questions find resolution. Nevertheless, in preparation, I can let you know that it has something to do with the law.
Maranatha!
