Back in the day, anyone who came up against Moses had God to deal with. And why did God make Himself an enemy of Moses’ enemies? Because Moses was God’s mouthpiece. God spoke to him face to face. Hopefully, before this day is done, you will learn and love to become a mouthpiece of God.
Wouldn’t that be so cool? You no longer have to fight your own battles. God fights for you. Miriam and Aaron knew this phenomenon only too well. It is a highly favored post to hold in God’s vineyard.
Becoming a mouthpiece of God may very well turn out to be the best ever Christmas gift you receive. After your initial adoption into God’s family, that is. And yet, because of the bad rap that speaking as God’s mouthpiece had, many Charismatic and Pentecostal believers shy away. Please note that this is not a criticism of these groups. They at least know to covet Spiritual gifts. Others appear not to even acknowledge that such gifts exist, let alone covet them.
Staying with the ones who do know, they prefer to take the path of least resistance. They choose to earnestly covet the gift of speaking in tongues. Never mind that such tongues are mostly false tongues. However, that is a story for another day. For now, we motivate you toward the better gift.
Covet The Best Gifts
The Bible makes it clear that prophecy is the sign for believers. On the other hand, speaking in tongues is a sign for unbelievers. Ouch! You simply have to wonder how many believers are busy walking back their faith by speaking in tongues. In other words, their faith is retrogressing instead of growing. All because they choose to covet the unbelievers’ sign.
Of course, whatever you do in God’s vineyard has to be in an envelope of love. Otherwise, it amounts to nothing, whether it is prophecy or tongues. This is why Paul refers to love as the more excellent way and the bond of perfection.
Nevertheless, in addition to pursuing love, you are to earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. Desiring prophecy over tongues builds up your faith. And the reason for that is not far to seek. Here you are, talking to God, listening to Him and running errands for Him on others’ behalf. It stands to reason that you will be extremely intimate with God.
Desire To Become A Mouthpiece Of God
There is no way to be intimate with God without being a person of faith. What’s more, the more you love God, the more faith you have. The branch that bears fruit becomes even more fruitful with God’s touch.
Most believers think of God as too high to talk to mere mortals. Some even reflect this attitude in their prayers. They pray, “Thou that dwellest in the Heavens….” These believe that God is up yonder and that they are here-under, and they twain shall never meet. But nothing could be farther from the truth. God wants to speak to us more than we want to listen to Him.
In addition, as you serve as God’s mouthpiece, you too will hear God speak about your own issues. After all, it is not possible to channel oil to others without being oiled yourself. Being a prophet of God is a win-win-win situation. God wins by being able to communicate with His creation. Your friends and family – or the entire world if you are a global prophet – win because they hear God.
And you? You get to return with the greatest reward. First, you are useful to the One who died for you. Secondly, you get a prophet’s honor – an ever-widening circle of influence. And finally, you become a friend of God. All because you become a mouthpiece of God.
Qualify To Become A Mouthpiece Of God
Unfortunately, it is one thing to desire to become a mouthpiece of God, it is quite another thing to actually become one. The qualifications or conditions for becoming a mouthpiece of God are two lonely but extremely steep hills.
In an earlier post, we had pointed out that the bible is a book of conditions. We find two such conditions in the verse that speaks about how you can become a mouthpiece of God. As always, each one starts with the conditional word “If.”
You may consider the first condition a plateau when compared with the second condition, a colossus. At the very beginning of desiring to become a mouthpiece of God, you must return to God. Here is the portion of that verse. “If you return, then I will bring you back. You shall stand before Me.” You say “but of course.”
However, not all believers appreciate that simple fact. In fact, we often behave as though God should return to us if He wishes to send us. Nevertheless, difficult as it is to turn our backs on all that titillates us to return to God is, the next condition is even tougher.
“If you take out the precious from the vile, you shall be as My mouth.” You know of course, that all that is of God is holy and precious. But you may not know what the vile is. And yet, for you to become a mouthpiece of God, you must identify the vile. Then, you must take a surgical blade and start to cut it all out of your life. The presupposition here is that, in order to hear and transmit messages from a holy God, you must be holy.
A Good Man May Still Be Vile
Don’t breathe a sigh of relief yet. Holiness is a very high standard. It is much higher than being good and upright, which is the lane in which most of us travel. For example, you do not have to be an adulterer to have committed adultery – in your heart. Ditto for murder. Even swearing an oath renders you unholy.
Anger? You just lost your holiness, sorry. At best, sin is an iceberg. Most of our unholy acts are underneath the surface. Actually, unholiness is a condition of the heart and that is what makes it such a steep hill to climb. You see, the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. King David quite understood that. Therefore he prayed, “Let my heart be blameless regarding your statutes, that I may not be ashamed.” The King wanted to be able to stand before God without embarrassment. He wanted to become a mouthpiece for God.
Okay, it is tough and not everybody will scale that height. But you are not everybody. You are a child of God, who can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
Go for it. Become the mouthpiece of God. The rewards are absolutely phenomenal.
Maranatha!
Curious about the high standard of holiness. This attribute seems humanly unattainable. But how does the individual know this feat has been attained during his lifetime. Is there any clear, static indicator which measures specifically that this standard has been attained by the human agent ?
