The other day, as I was studying Matthew 25, I was impressed afresh with the way the talent distribution went. First, Jesus gave each of us talents according to our abilities and so, we cannot accuse Him of partiality. Unfortunately, because of slavish fear, the servant who received a single talent went and hid it. The King referred to him as an unprofitable servant. And suddenly, I had a strong desire to become a profitable servant, going forward.
And the reason I wanted to become a profitable servant is not far to seek. It is also the same reason for writing this post so that you too will desire the same. Because the other option is a terrible state of affairs. You may remember the account in the bible. Jesus was telling a parable about His Father’s Kingdom – that place to which we are all hoping to travel.
The Unprofitable Servant And His Talent
In it, we see ourselves as being here on earth, expected to occupy till our King comes. Most of us actually do what is expected of us and we each thereby become a profitable servant. Unfortunately, there are those who, like the servant who received one talent, become unprofitable servants.
The reason you do not use your talent for the good of your Master Jesus is one that only you know. Some people suggest it is due to envy of the man with greater talents. Others suggest it is due to fear of the Master. Whatever his, and your, reason for hiding or burying your talent, you must have a rethink.
The Fate Of The Unprofitable Servant
And the reason is that the fate of such a person is doom and damnation. The judgment on the unprofitable servant is truly scary. This is how the Master describes the servant who was unprofitable. “You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So, you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming, I would have received back my own with interest. So, take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.”
I pray never to be referred to as a wicked servant. Because, as you may know, the end of the wicked is hell. That alone is enough motivation for you to seek to become a profitable servant. But there is more. Additionally, the unprofitable servant lost the little that he did have. Perhaps that is where the English adage “Use it or lose it” came from. How has your talent store been like in the recent past? Has it been growing or has it been diminishing?
Today Is The Day To Become A Profitable Servant
If it is the latter, there is only one remedy. Become a profitable servant today and watch God increase you on all sides. That is the beauty of God, He makes His plans plain. Just do what He says and He will do what He promises. Please start being active in your local fellowship right away. That is how you become a profitable servant. And guess where that puts you at the end of your life here on earth.
Let us hear the answer straight from Jesus, our Savior. He said, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.” Of course, you know where the joy of God is, heaven. I pray you will make the necessary changes to get you there.
Maranatha!
