Unless you understand that Jesus is the opposite of man, Jesus’s actions don’t make any sense. Be on the lookout for my upcoming book, “Inverse” which goes into greater detail on that. Jesus was a king but He insisted on traveling on His feet and sandals. Think about that for a moment, how opposite that is to what we would do. Even an ordinary man would choose a different means of travel, given the option. But not Jesus, the King. Everywhere He went, Jesus kept walking.
Is there a reason He did that? More significantly, is there a lesson in it for us? I believe there is, but before we go on, allow me to give a shoutout to one of our subscribers. As straight as an arrow, she stated she almost shut down one of our posts on nutrition. Things were straying too far from the bible for her liking.
But the Holy Spirit prompted her to read to the end. Then she saw the reason we are having this series on Divine Health. She said it so well that the only way to do her justice is to quote her. “LIVE LONG, FULFILL GOD’s PURPOSE e.g., Paul. Perfect!” Believe me, that comment made my day.
What she did not know was what the same Holy Spirit was already prompting me to do. That’s right. Yet another post on nutrition. I trust you enjoyed last week’s post because that was all on the Holy Spirit, not me. But seriously, I always thank God for His Holy Spirit. Where would we be without Him? You know and I know. We would be in the dark, stumbling through life. So, thanks to the Holy Spirit, we finally concluded the posts on nutrition and now come to physical exercise.
The Reason Jesus Kept Walking
We started this post by observing that Jesus kept walking. Unless you exercise regularly, you may not appreciate the weight of the statement. Many times, you have to stop and rest. Occasionally, you may even have to cut the exercise short and return home. But our Savior? Jesus kept walking. And, in His own case, walking was not just for physical exercise. Jesus said that his food was do the will of His Father. He also wanted to complete the assignment His Father gave Him.
In Jesus’ line of work, you cannot do that from an office chair or even in a gym. Hopefully, we shall have time for a post on the spiritual benefit you can derive if you keep walking. But for now, we focus on the fact that Jesus kept walking. Of course, there were those times he took a boat. On land however, he mostly walked, not because they did not have other modes of transportation back then. So, why did Jesus do what He did?
First, everything Jesus did, He did for our example. You see, it is only as we become like Jesus that we have an assurance of getting into Heaven. So, Jesus’ walking was our example, but example for what? The answer is simple. Physical exercise. Every day now, your news feed has something about how much exercise you need to stay healthy. Sometimes the topic will include the health of your heart. All I can say is “welcome to Jesus.” What Jesus knew from the beginning is what medical doctors are just finding out.
Living Long to fulfill Prophecy
These doctors all claim that walking will improve your heart health and help you live longer. And I know they are right is why I try to walk five thousand or so steps every day. Our Savior also knew is why Jesus kept walking. Now, you are wondering why He only lived to be thirty-three and half years before He died. There is a whole lot we could say about that but we shall cite only on reason. Our Savior knew He was on a mission during His trip to the earth from Heaven.
We all know that missions have an end point, that they don’t last forever. I believe Jesus knew His mission to earth would end when it did. But to be sure it didn’t end prematurely, Jesus kept walking. Imagine if he had been riding around on a horse or a donkey. His heart would have been weak and he could have expired at twenty-nine or thirty years of age. And He would never have accomplished salvation for us. He would never have destroyed the works of satan.
What about you? Personally, I don’t walk to lose weight. I believe health is more about your heart than about your weight. Thankfully, I am now in my mid-seventies and believe I will live even longer. Long enough to keep doing what God has called me to do in His vineyard. What will you do? Remember that although He had the option of riding, Jesus kept walking. Next week, by the grace of God, we shall consider the spiritual significance of Jesus’ walking habit.
To Your Health!
