Up until recently, I despised my birthright – my new-birth birthright that is. You see, when we are born again and are baptized by the Holy Spirit, we receive new-birth gifts. There are several gifts but today we want to focus on speaking in tongues. And that is the particular gift that I lightly esteemed until lately. Like Esau who gave his birthright away for a plate of food, I too let go of my birthright for nonsensical reasons.
Not having received the baptism of the Holy Spirit since you were saved would be a good reason not to speak in tongues. It is also a very good cause to covet the Holy Spirit baptism. God said that He would never refuse any who asks Him for that baptism. And so, if your reason for not speaking in tongues is genuine, this is your chance. Ask God for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, right where you are and He will give it to you. He promised and you know that He is a faithful God.
Unfortunately, that was not my reason for resisting speaking in tongues; they were spurious. First, there was the person who made fun of me the first time they heard me speaking in tongues. In hindsight, shutting up because of somebody who did not believe is nothing short of stupid. Plus, I have since learned that the act is supposed to be private, not for public consumption. Not unless there is an interpreter in the group.
Second Chance
Next, there was the fact that those believers who spoke in tongues seemed to be the worst sort of sinners. We are not here talking of sins of the heart but obvious vices. That really put me off, I must confess. Until I saw from scriptures where Jesus told Peter to simply follow Him. He was saying to me in effect, to not look at others, to just focus on Jesus. That speedily cured me.
Let them be speaking in tongues and committing adultery. What was that to me was what Jesus was saying and I am glad I took the correction. In a way, God was giving me the second chance that He did not give to Esau. Please note the difference between those who are born once and those who are born a second time. If you desire second chances, from God, come into His family through Jesus; be born again. It is as simple as that.
Now that I have received this second chance, I am learning as much as I can about it. But that is not all, I am taking full advantage of speaking in tongues. Oh, you did not know it had advantages? All of God’s gifts give us advantages over those who are yet to accept Christ. For instance, you are no longer walking in the dark but in the light of Jesus. In your life and situation, God is saying “Let there be light” and there is light.
Access God’s Power By Speaking In Tongues
Moreover, when the gifts of God come through His Holy Spirit, you can be sure they are supercharged with advantages. So it is with speaking in tongues. It is like drawing from the well of God. His knowledge, His wisdom, His mercy, His faithfulness, His protection, His everything comes to you when you speak in tongues. 
It is quite possible that, like me, one thing or another is dissuading you from speaking in tongues. Repent and start speaking, learning as much as possible about it from the scriptures as you go along. Do you recall how I said I started to learn everything about it? For instance, I found what speaking in the tongue of men means.
It means you can speak in another earthly language that you did not study. That is what the Apostles did on the Day of Pentecost that people from fifteen different nations understood them. But that does not negate the apparent gibberish that people utter while speaking in tongues. That is speaking in the tongues of angels to which that verse refers. I am still on the learning journey and I recommend that you do not stop learning about speaking in tongues.
All the power of God, His omnipotence, is available to you when you delight in speaking in tongues. You are transferring God and His attributes into your life by so doing. I know this by experience and speaking in tongues has my five-star review.
Beware Of False Tongues
Another thing I learned is that there are false tongues, which I am sure you know already. What you may not know is that there is a way to know when someone is speaking in tongues falsely. The Holy Spirit gave me the strategy many years ago and it has never failed. Just knowing you can silence all false tongues will encourage you to enjoy speaking in tongues.
This is like getting rid of counterfeit currencies, which would in turn strengthen your faith in the authentic ones. Once you are able to silence those who are falsely speaking in tongues, you are free to enjoy God. Whenever someone is blabbering and you suspect false tongues, simply ask the Holy Spirit to take control.
You see, they are lying directly against the Holy Spirit by speaking in false tongues. That is offensive to the Holy Spirit who immediately stops them and forces them to revert to a known language. When that happens, it is all I can do not to smile. Try it sometime if you suspect false tongues. The Holy Spirit’s response will blow you away.
