Today is when our posts pivot to nutrition in our series on Divine Health. This is the post that went missing last week. We are resending it for your full benefit. You may recall that we spent the past four months on mental health. Expectedly, the posts to come in this aspect of the series will not be as numerous as the ones on mental health. And the reason for that is not far to seek. Our minds influence everything we do, even what, when, and how we eat. James says that even sin originates in the mind. All the same, we must go on to some other aspect of our lives as we consider mankind’s diet at the dawn of creation. We call it the creation diet since it is the food that Adam and Eve ate immediately after God completed creation.
We see God in the book of Genesis with His usual kindness, creating man’s food before He made man. King David says in Psalm 23, God prepares a table before us. Please note that, on this blog, we believe that God created us in His image. However, we do not waste time arguing with those who believe they descended, not from man but from apes and monkeys. As long as they respect our belief system, we shall respect theirs even if that includes a cauldron of soup.
After creating them, God gave Adam and Eve clear instructions concerning the creation diet. “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth. And every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you, it shall be for food.” Does this mean we should all be vegetarians since the creation diet consists of herbs and trees?
Why We Are So Far Removed From The Creation Diet
Some people interpret that verse to mean vegetables and fruits and we don’t argue with that. But please don’t hear me implying that I am a vegetarian. Far from it, I like animal protein and none more than red meat, the one that doctors say is bad. I know red meat – make that all meat – is bad for me, but so is sin. We still sin, don’t we? And that is why sticking to the creation diet by being a vegetarian is so hard. Staying away from sin is so hard without the help of the Holy Spirit.
Sin is the reason we started eating meat, not only the original sin but the human tendency to sin. What is sin? The best way to view sin is to include in it all the instances in which we disobey God’s instruction. Unfortunately for the relationship between us and our maker, the world views sin as vices – obvious bad acts.
That list includes murder, adultery, stealing, lying, and so on. But all acts of disobedience to God is sin, whether it is obvious or invisible. If God says you should stay and you go, you have sinned. That is what Adam and Eve did, disobey God and although nothing changed on the outside, it was still a sin. In their case, they disobeyed by eating the fruit that God said they should not eat. It is known as the Fall, from which you and I got our desire for sin.
Don’t Feel Guilty About Your Diet
And only after that sin did God change the creation diet to include meat. Since God had to kill an animal to cover their nakedness, death entered the world. You find Cain killing his brother soon after that, and it was but a short jump to man killing animals for food. God allowed us to include meat in our diet after the flood in which God saved Noah. That spelt the end of the creation diet.
Does this mean you are to feel guilty about enjoying meat? Not at all, because even Jesus, our ultimate example, had meat occasionally. But it helps to know that this diet resulted from our sins. Why? Recognizing it as part of a sinful package will keep us from ever thinking we are free from sin. It keeps us humble and that can only help us to properly approach God. Don’t forget that Jesus humbled Himself unto the death on the cross is why, now, He is exalted above all else. Now, at the name of Jesus, every knee bows. Humility is what got him there and humility is what can get you higher.
So, if all you take away from this post is the need for humility, it is well worth it. Our way of eating (meat) is an outcome of the original sin. Remember that it was not so at the beginning when God gave us the creation diet of vegetables and fruits.
To your health and Maranatha!
