Who would not like to abide under the shadow of the Almighty? If you are not one of us, there must be something wrong with you. But you know, from Psalm 91.1, that the trigger for that promise of God is to dwell in the secret place of the Most High. That passage says, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
You also know that the Most High is another name for God, and wish someone would show you the secret place of God. Welcome to your breakthrough moment. Our Father promises that all who discover the secret place of God shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I can tell you, without fear of controversy, that it is the most secure place on earth. And anyone would be stupid not to desire to dwell there.
However, events show that only a tiny proportion of people know how to get under the shadow of the Almighty, let alone dwell there. That is what we are about to discover in this post. Where is the secret place of God? Any decent Bible scholar will immediately tell you that it is not a physical location. We all agree it is a spiritual location.
Do not go on a pilgrimage to find the secret place of God. I suppose it would hardly be a secret if you could locate it on a map. Likewise, do not go to your pastor or mentor to ask about the secret place of God. Perhaps they are equally searching for it. We shall locate it today.
The Beauty of The Shadow of The Almighty
Psalm 91 is full of beautiful promises. This is where God promises an island of calmness and peace in an ocean of crises. I should say the world is chaotic at this time, wouldn’t you? No money even in the face of inflation; doctors make exotic diagnoses to scare us into opening our wallets; cyberattacks and AI impersonation to defraud rich and poor alike; airplanes colliding in the air and on the ground; and we have not yet started on wars and rumors of wars.
But for the one who locates the secret place of God, no trap or pandemic (pestilence) will catch you. While others are running helter-skelter with fear, you stand firm in faith. That nighttime terror? The arrow that flies by day? The plague that affects the world? You will only read about them in the news. None of them shall come near you, not even when ten thousand people fall at your right hand.
Instead, God will give His angels charge over you to keep you in all your ways and bear you up in their hands. You will not encounter accidents, not even to dash your foot against a stone. From that position of safety, you will watch people reaping the rewards of their wickedness. None of the evil shall come near you, not even when you step on a lion or a snake.
Bible Definition of the Secret Place of God
The promises continue, but God ensures that we know why He shows such generosity toward us. It is because we have made the Lord, even the Most High, our dwelling place. And that can only happen when you discover the secret place of God. When that happens, you can be sure God will satisfy you with a long life.
Even if you did not know enough to hunger for the shadow of the Almighty, you are now eager to get there. You cannot wait to have someone show you the secret place of God so you can enter into His promise of abiding under God’s Shadow. So you wonder why we are beating about the bush instead of going directly to its location.
How will you know when you find the secret place of God unless you can recognize what you are looking for? And this is the mistake many writers on the topic make. They go straight to the location of the secret place of God, without first defining it. To attempt a definition, we look into scriptures.
The Bible says, in Psalm 25.14, that the secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him. Why would He share His secret with you if you do not fear Him? Isaiah 8.13-14 expands this concept of the secret place of God as the fear of God. “The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow; let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread. He will be as a sanctuary…”
The Fear of God
Is God my fear? Is God your dread? Then, you can relax, because God will be your sanctuary. A sanctuary is defined as a place of refuge or safety. You see, God never contradicts Himself. This passage says that if you fear God, He will be your Sanctuary, or place of refuge. In Psalm 91.1, the psalmist assures that those who dwell in the secret place of God shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Fear God and dwell in His sanctuary (place of refuge and safety). As a result, you will abide under His shadow (a place of security). From the foregoing, it is quite clear that the secret place of God is the fear of God. Now that we know what the secret place of God is, we need to learn how to arrive at that location. How do you fear God so you can dwell securely?
For a clue, we look into the first chapter of the book of Job, but, since we have run out of space for now, that will be the subject of our next post. Be sure to get it in your inbox by subscribing to this blog. Share with your loved ones as well.
