Enoch had a testimony, that he pleased God. He experienced a type of the Rapture, our stated goal. Evidently, only those who please God will live with Him eternally. But unless we start viewing sin as an iceberg, we cannot please God. Because that which we observe is merely the tip of the iceberg. Its largest percentage lives beneath the surface. In the same way, visible sins are merely the tip of the sin iceberg.
We Need To Start Viewing Sin As An Iceberg
Actually, you may wonder why we are talking of sin at all. It is because we are on a journey. We prepare by packing only what we need for our trip. We do not take our entire home with us on a journey. Or as the writer to the Hebrews says, “let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Obviously, you do not pack your washer or refrigerator as you prepare for your trip.
Similarly, there are sin weights which we carry around. And there is nothing wrong with lugging them around, as long as you do not plan to fly with them. However, those weights are not allowed in Heaven. Therefore, as we pack for our final trip, we must let them go.
Nevertheless, unless we identify what those are, we may erroneously attempt to pack them. Attempting to fly to heaven with weights of sin has eternal repercussions. This is the reason we must consider sin and start viewing it as an iceberg.
Viewing Sin As An Iceberg Shows Most Sin Is Invisible
Archimedes calculates that 90% of an iceberg is under the sea, where it is invisible to the naked eye. In like manner, at least 90% of sin is invisible to the human eye. To view the balance, you need special equipment.
Unfortunately for mankind, Jesus has special ‘equipment’. His name is the Holy Spirit. For instance, the only evidence that you are lusting after a woman or man is known as adultery. But Jesus describes that particular sin as an iceberg. He declares that what you observe is merely the tip of the sin iceberg. The lust in your heart, invisible though it be to the rest of mankind, is the largest section of that sin.
The Tip Of The Iceberg Of Sin Is Vice
To start the ball rolling, God painted His ten commandments with a broad stroke. A contravention of any of those commandments is known as a vice. Typically, the courts have something to say about vices. They are evident, liable to prosecution. They represent the tip of the iceberg. Paul groups them together as the works of the flesh.
“Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions.” The group includes jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like. Evidently, those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. I like to think that we all know to refrain from vices and hence live above the law.
Most Of Our Sin Is In The Heart.
Nevertheless, there are many more sins, of which we may not be immediately aware. Just like the 90% of the iceberg, they are not evident. And yet, they serve to debar men and women from heaven. By learning of them, we have a chance to let go of them before it is too late.
James, the brother of Jesus says that sin starts within the desires of our hearts. We do not see your heart and therefore no one can accuse you. No court of law can indict you. Which is not to say that you are not committing the sin, deep within your heart.
Jesus sees it and He will not write the name of such a one in His book of life. He says that out of the heart come evil thoughts, which ultimately produce evil acts. The tip of the iceberg can only stand if there is an iceberg holding it up. In the same way, evil acts are only evident when an evil heart is holding them up. The heart of sin is the main thing, the pillar of evident sin.
Breaking Off Sin As An Iceberg
Can you imagine that cowardice will get a person into hell? Yes, the bible says so. “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Fear is a sin, as is whatever is not from faith. The unbelieving too will not make it into heaven. If you find that too scary, take action.
There is a way out of that quandary. We can please God and live eternally with Him. All we need do is to focus on our hearts. We have to diligently keep our hearts free from even the hint of any evil thought. Even when the world calls us just, we know our hearts need work. For no unrighteousness will get into Heaven That is when we break the yoke of the iceberg of sin.
You know that once a piece of the iceberg breaks off, it starts to melt. When we break off the yoke of a sinful heart, even our vices – visible sin – starts to melt off. You now find sin abhorrent, albeit initially inexplicably. The things that used to make you tick no longer excite you. You wonder how and why, until you realize that the Holy Spirit is at work, breaking you off from the iceberg.
Don’t resist Him. He is preparing you for a life of an eternity with God. Rejoice in Him. Guard your hearts with all diligence, as the Bible enjoins.
Maranatha!
